Abereena Xu
by Grace Yao
Abereena is a performing artist, but she also enjoys writing (short stories and poems), painting (acrylic and watercolour), and reading. Although she plays badminton, Abereena’s priority is synchronized swimming (synchro).
One of Abereena’s inspirations is Virginie Dedieu, a French former synchronized swimmer who is a world champion, an Olympic medalist and has stunning art form and shape in synchro.
Abereena’s favourite routine that she has swam was for her first international competition: the Hungarian open in 2023. Her acrobatic routine allowed her to finish 2nd. She loves how she can use synchronized swimming to express herself and her subconscious without words as well as being able to perfect her routines to achieve a personal best. When it comes to self-expression, Abereena finds that synchro, similar to any type of performance, “is meant to bring out/evoke some type of emotion,” since performers are responsible for picking music, which can set the mood and “artistic impression is a whole category in the judging system.” Synchronized swimming has taught her skills such as teamwork, meticulousness, and time management, which have shaped her into the person she is today.
Abereena is currently a coach with Cruisers Artistic Swimming, and although this has been an enriching experience for her, she doesn’t believe that she would like to pursue coaching as a full-time job.
