CCMC was launched in September 2024 after a school-wide survey found that 16% of respondents had played classical music, yet many students felt discouraged by its absence across the school’s 41-year history. At the same time, national data indicates that one in five seniors experience loneliness and social isolation. In response, then-Grade 11 students Matthew Yu and William Wei launched the club, coaxing instruments out of closets and into the hands of new performers. What began as a small initiative has since grown to 68 members across 5 schools. Having collaborated with 12 community partners, performed with social media influencers, and composed with Indigenous artists on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, CCMC is burgeoning by the day; it has now led 32 performances for seniors across Metro Vancouver, including subsidized housing in the Downtown Eastside.
