Jaslynn Zhao,
by Kevin Hu
Jaslynn Zhao is a grade 10 debater who has attended Collingwood since grade 4. Prior to that, she went to Stratford hall for 3 years. Hailing from Tianjin, China, she is interested in debate, social media, and hanging out with friends. The first time she experienced any form of art was in preschool, when she attended painting and martial arts classes. Now in grade 10, Jaslynn’s preferred form of art is dance due to its freedom of expression. She has competed in both debate and dance competitions prior to the pandemic. Over the years, she had a lot of mentors that helped her with her art. A notable figure she cites for her passion is Mr. Joliffe, her grade 9 English teacher, who nurtured her passion for debate. She continues to pursue both art forms currently.
Nevertheless, her philosophy and beliefs for art are interesting, and bring a new perspective to this school. She thinks that art can easily express certain emotions or personality traits, due to it being able to tell elaborate stories to the audience. Art brings an essential meaning to objects around us. Emotions and many architectural designs have integrated a large amount of art inside of them. Jaslynn strongly believes that young artists should not let criticism bring them down when individuals do not enjoy their work. There will be others who appreciate their work, so it is key that they continue to do what they love. She also advises to always try something new, even if it’s not art. To her, her experience with art brought her more patience, creativity, and a wider perspective. These aspects of her philosophy all support her belief of the significance of artwork.
Jaslynn also has a large amount of future aspirations that she holds in high regard. However, not all of them are related to art. She would like to dedicate her time to more debate, or major in science, law, and business. She thinks that art has enabled her to develop as a person, and give her a stronger foundation for creative thinking in the long term. In the future, she hopes to explore a greater variety of the arts, and apply them to careers. Jaslynn has shown great aptitude in art, and we are excited to see what she creates in the future.
