Josiah Ong
By Grace Ya
Josiah Ong, a current Grade 11 student, was born in Vancouver and started attending Collingwood School in Grade 9.
He is a musician who creates music using "a music notation software (like MuseScore studio) or using a DAW (like Ableton Live) or online drafting programs like Beepbox." In addition to music, Josiah also uses Blender to sculpt, render, and position objects in different lighting conditions, creates 2D animations using Blender and Adobe Animate, and 3D prints in his free time.
Since no particular person can be credited with inspiring everything Josiah does, he takes his inspiration from the people around him. Since everyone is doing their own unique thing, he is able to approach his art from several angles. If he had the chance, Josiah would ask those around him about their inspirations.

Since everyone is doing their own unique thing, he is able to approach his art from several angles. If he had the chance, Josiah would ask those around him about their inspirations.
When it comes to his art, Josiah doesn’t have favorites because he feels that he can continually improve on his work, and he often does. His favorite aspect of creating music is "the ability to apply critical thinking and creative thinking to art is a pretty unique experience. It's almost like engineering, but instead of whether something will work in the real world, it's if something feels right. Similar yet different thought process."
According to Josiah, the arts are a representation of his personality, as his art is uniquely his art. His emotions impact his creations, and art allows him to express himself in ways he may not be able to otherwise. For any aspiring musicians out there, Josiah’s advice is to "just continue making it. If your art serves the purpose you want it to, or even a purpose you might not realize at first, continue on it. Hone in your skills and continue and see where it goes" since "art comes in many shapes and forms." |
Josiah doesn’t plan on studying art through university in the future, but he believes that he will continue creating art as a pastime. He trusts that his art will continue to impact his life in the future, as art is versatile and has taught him creativity.
