About Arts mag
Since its inception thirteen years ago, Arts Mag has shone its spotlight on the artistic talents of the Collingwood body. We have celebrated art in a kaleidoscope of forms by showcasing the prowess of painters, drawers, graphic artists, orators, musicians, singers, actors, poets, writers, sculptors, photographers and designers. From budding artists to seasoned veterans, the students and teachers who have graced the pages of our previous online issues have shared their inspiration, their philosophy and their passion vis-à-vis life and the role of art.
We have even followed the creative path of some of these individuals beyond Collingwood; some alumni have continued to pursue their art as a pastime, while others have made it a post-secondary career. Some have even experienced the transformative energy of art, and have discovered new or different means of artistic expression.
At every stage, Arts Mag has strove to delight the senses through the richness of colour, movement, texture and musicality that our artists have captured in their works. It is with admiration, joy and awe that the Arts Mag team thanks our contributors. In the same vein of artistic exploration and creative experimentation, we have decided to update the look of Arts Mag. We hope that you enjoy the new format.

Happy Spring! With the advent of the vernal equinox, also known as the spring or March equinox, many cultures around the world celebrate new life, hope, light, and creation. Such symbols of vitality and energy can equally be venerated in this issue of Arts Mag. Like the cherry blossoms, magnolia trees, verdant landscapes, and sunshine that have begun to make their appearance and to capture our imagination, the featured art work of both our emerging and seasoned artists are a breath of fresh air. Indeed, the Arts Mag team continues to be inspired by the wise words, insightful perspectives and talented displays of Collingwood’s artists. Enjoy!

Meet the Team
Mahasti Mofazali — Director
Mahasti is a French teacher, painter, art collector and singer. She loves to travel to different places and immerse herself in the culture of the countries she visits. She has been the director of Arts Mag for the past 16 years. She organizes Cav Prom and is part of Backpack Buddies but Arts Mag is her favourite co-curricular activity because it gives her the chance to discover the hidden talents of the Collingwood community. |
Manuela Vieira-Ribeiro — Editor-in-Chief
Manuela has been the editor-in-chief of Arts Mag since its inception. Featured in an early edition of Arts Mag for her own culinary creativity and panache, Manuela also plays the piano and participates in book clubs. Despite a busy schedule with two young sons, she loves being on the Arts Mag team because she is constantly delighted and awed by the remarkable artistic talent that surrounds her. |
Cherry Zhi -- Visuals Director
This is Cherry’s second year working with Arts Mag and she is excited to take on a leadership role within the team. She looks forward to making Arts Mag a dynamic and exciting publication. |
Tansy Cai — Co-Director
This is Tansy's third year in the Art Mag Committee. She is extremely passionate about art, music and dance, so she loves writing articles about the amazing artists in our school! |
Eva Cai — Montage Artist, Writer
Eva loves to paint, doodle, and read in her free time. A DIY enthusiast, she is always excited to try a new craft project; Eva finds a way to express herself through crafting, particularly in calligraphy and quilling. |
Tina Haertel, Grade 12
Tina is excited to be part of the team and to feature many unknown artists who are hidden at Collingwood. |
Kristine Falck, Grade 11
Kristine enjoys discovering her classmates' artistic passions. While primarily renowned for her academic accomplishments, Kristine enjoys participating in the arts, notably dance and photography. Outside of school, she can be found playing tennis, golf or skiing. |
Riley Schleining, Grade 11
This is Riley's first year participating in the Collingwood Arts Mag. She is ecstatic to become a valued member of the team. Riley's artistic passions include writing and competitive dance, which she has been involved in since the age of 5. |
Pirooz Malektojar, Grade 11
This is Pirooz's first year helping with Arts Mag. Pirooz loves to read news articles and aspires to be a journalist someday himself. Pirooz is well versed in many topics. |
Jenny Yang, Grade 11
Jenny is a grade 11 student with a passion for art. During her free time, she likes to socialize, and hang out with friends. |
Selina Mao, Grade 11
Selina loves to dance, draw and write. Art and dance are her preferred mediums of self expression. She plans to pursue writing in the future and her favourite quote is "dance is a lifestyle". |
Emily Larman, Grade 11
Emily is new to Arts Mag this year. This is her second year at Collingwood. She loves writing, debate, movies, concerts and TV shows. |
Eric Zhao, Grade 11
Eric is a grade 11 student. It is his second year writing for Art Mag. He is a huge soccer fan and loves playing sports and listening to music. Earphones are his signature; If you are looking for him at school, look for the guy who always has earphones plugged in. |
Alana Davies, Grade 11
Alana Davies is very excited to join Arts Mag for her first year. She is passionate about French and the performing arts, specifically piano, singing, and theatre. This is Alana’s third year at Collingwood and she is so happy to be here. She is looking forward to the Arts Mag experience! |
Sian Shin, Grade 10
Sian has loved writing ever since she was little. Her other passions include dancing and playing guitar. She loves being able to share other people's stories through Arts Mag. |
Claire Yu , Grade 10
Claire joined Collingwood when she was in grade eight. She is passionate about art and reading and she loves to laugh at jokes. She enjoys being in Arts Mag and would love to explore more people at Collingwood. |
Susan Zhao, Grade 10
This is Susan’s first year joining Art Mag. She loves music and sports and wishes to meet more great Collingwood artists. In her free time, she enjoys reading novels and watching TV dramas in other languages as well as watching anime. |
Alexis Ong, Grade 10
Alexis has been in Arts Mag since grade 8. She loves baking, music and the TV show Bones. |
