Although often best known for his contributions to the scientific community and his excellence in Biology, Jerry Lin (grade 11) is enthusiastically involved in the arts strand as well. He came to Collingwood in grade 8, and has since been an active member in all aspects from the science club to the art show, Vanishing Point. Jerry’s photos are often spotted hanging in the halls, and the stills of vast landscapes are a breath of fresh air when walking indoors. Having just been a part of the Art show this spring, Jerry enjoys photography and plans on continuing his artistic pursuits in the future.

When asked about his influences, Jerry lists Elia Locardi as his favourite photographer. Like Locardi, Jerry enjoys landscape photography, and the sense of vastness that it creates. He especially enjoys photographing aspects of nature and cityscapes, and prefers wide angle shots as his goto method of capturing the moment: “I especially love to take wide shots of them as I feel it brings a sense of depth and immersion to the picture.”
Considering Jerry’s hobbies outside of photography, his subject matter is very fitting. Jerry allocates his free time “messing around with drones, plants, electricity and of course, photography.” Perhaps it is partly his love of playing around with plants that drives his affinity for landscape and nature photography, and his fondness for tinkering with electricity and drones that shows in his delight for capturing manmade cityscapes.
To aspiring photographers, Jerry’s advice is “ Learn manual mode and start early. Do not use auto mode(s) too much because you will get used to it and it will be hard to switch to manual mode later.”
Jerry’s photos speak for themselves, with their delightful refreshingness in original subject matter and majestic portrayal of the world around us. They display Locardi’s influence without detracting from Jerry’s own unique artistic style, creating a beautiful blend of skillful technique and creativity. Hopefully, we will be seeing even more of his works in the coming year!
