Knowledge, Commitment and Inspiration are all words that describe the Sr Jazz Band Percussionist, Graydon Cronk. Having developed his enthusiasm for Jazz in Gr 5, Graydon has been in the Jazz band ever since Gr 6. Graydon’s early achievements include performing exceptionally well in the 2015 Whistler band trip and being a co-leader of the Collingwood Drumline.
When asked why he enjoys jazz, Graydon responded, “I find Jazz to be a great way to connect to people, even complete strangers. There are so many different types of Jazz that there is no other music genre even coming close, Jazz is unique and brimming with the artist’s emotion.”
“I was instantly enraptured by the sense of community in the Jazz band,” Graydon says. He also contributes to this sense in a group that he enjoys being with.
Graydon has accumulated years of experience and practice, becoming extremely adept in locking in with the rest of the rhythm section and laying down a groove everyone in the band can jam to. His performances feature him moulding the mood and movements in a piece, having both overwhelming pressure and unbreakable trust put on him in each performance.
Graydon, being both very open-minded and adaptable, learns at an exceedingly fast pace and races to become the best he can be. Currently, in Gr 11, he seeks to push
his limits in his last years at Collingwood. By participating in both Sr Jazz Band and being the Leader of Drum Corps, he has become an important member of the Collingwood Arts strand.
Graydon also has a passion for law and hopes to be an entertainment lawyer, saying that, “though this job would not come close to becoming a travelling Jazz musician, I hope I can still be connected to Jazz this way.”
After performing with Graydon for a few years, I know that he is passionate and determined enough to make his dreams come true.
By maintaining a welcoming sense of community, and still reaching out to surpass his limits, Graydon Cronk is a well-established core member of the Sr Jazz Band, which has kindled him into but another irreplaceable musician.
