Though she is perhaps best known for her incredible literary accomplishments, Angela Zhao, a multi-talented grade 12 student that the Collingwood community is lucky to have, is also a wonderful and prolific visual artist.
For Angela, art, whether it is visual, literary, or performing, is a way to express yourself in a way that is completely unique. “Everyone has a different interpretation of the same subject, and since there is no “right” answer in art, people can create in a truly freeing way that is rarely seen in other aspects of life,” Angela expressed.
Angela gains her inspiration from many different artists. One of her favourites is one that she follows online, whose screen name is Burdge. Burdge draws semi-realistic versions of some of Angela’s favourite characters from her favourite books, and her effortless drawing style also greatly appeals to Angela.

When asked about her advice for aspiring artists, Angela resolutely believes that the most important thing is just to have fun. According to her, while technique may be useful to learn, it’s definitely not the most important thing. She believes that passion and effort can create meaning all by themselves, and that is what truly makes an artwork amazing.
Angela’s visual artworks have been exhibited in many school shows. This includes Collingwood photography shows that took place last year, and one of her charcoal drawings was also featured in the St. Georges Independent Schools art exhibition. “Apart from doodling every day in class, I draw and paint for fun at home,” Angela said, “I like drawing people the most, and I like to experiment with different drawing styles. My favourite medium is pencil and paper.”

Apart from reading, writing, and visual arts, Angela also enjoys music, especially rock, alternative, and indie music. She has been playing piano since she was three, and she’s also currently trying to learn to play the guitar. Besides musical instruments, she also loves singing. Angela also admits to being a huge Netflix fan.
Though Angela has only moved to Vancouver from New York City in grade 10, she will definitely be missing Collingwood and her sister in grade 6 when she leaves for college. She has been accepted into the prestigious Wellesley College, a women’s college in Massachusetts, and will begin studying there this fall. She is currently planning on majoring in English there, though it’s not out of the question for her to double major in an artistic area. She is certain, however, that she will at least continue to develop her interest in visual arts and music as a hobby. Arts Mag wishes you the best of luck, Angela, with whatever your future endeavours may turn out to be!
