Other than the incredible talent she has shown in creative writing, Angela Wang also has a natural gift for visual art. An upcoming graduate of 2018, Angela’s works are frequently showcased on the exhibition walls of Collingwood’s Art Department, capturing the attention of students and teachers alike who pass by.
Born in Shanghai, China, Angela moved to Vancouver in Grade 8 and joined the Collingwood family in Grade 10. But from as far back as her time in Kindergarten, Angela discovered her gift of drawing, and she has developed her passion ever since. In Grade 10, she joined the enriched visual art class and started to contribute to Collingwood’s art community.
For Angela, art is all about “capturing the fine details of everyday life.” Her masterpieces are all incredible sketches of forms and objects that reflect their real-life image perfectly. Yet what seems like hours of intricate, focused work is instead a unique way to release stress for Angela, who states, “Art is a way to relax and delve into a completely different and fascinating world.” She admits that pencil-drawing is her favourite because it allows her copy every single detail in front of her onto the page exactly. “I also love oils and pastels, because they blend amazingly when I try to capture the shading and colour of [a] particular form,” she says. Angela thanks her art teacher in China for helping her develop her passion of drawing realistic still life and imprinting real-life objects into her sketches.

On top of her incredible talent for visual art, Angela is also an incredible creative writer and is very passionate about literature. Her love and talent of writing immediately made her stand out when she came to Collingwood as she quickly became the co-Editor-in-Chief for Collingwood’s Arts Magazine and the Editor of the Arts and Entertainment section in Ad Verum, Collingwood’s own school newspaper.
When asked about what advice she would give to budding artists, Angela encourages young artists to have faith in themselves: “Just keep practising and have fun while doing art. The most important thing is to have fun. Don’t try too hard to be original, because maybe you don’t notice it but your own ideas and styles always come out naturally in your art, so just work with that. As you persevere with it, you can slowly build up your own unique style. The point is not to rush.”
In the future, Angela hopes to continue to develop her love and skills for creative writing into her university years. She also hopes to branch out in the future to explore new styles of art, as well as to create her own unique style of drawing. As for new challenges, Angela admits that she is excited to try to learn to play the guitar. It is our fortune to have such a talented student in our community, and we wish Angela the best of luck as she continues down her path.
