Thank you for watching our video! This is the Collingwood Senior Jazz Band, under the direction of Mr. Corey Smith, and we have chosen to share their rendition of Shawn Mendes’ “Treat You Better.” Instead of playing a regular transcription, the students decided that it would be fun to take the original tune and re-imagine it in a variety of musical styles. We studied each style of music you see in our video and then worked together as a group to incorporate the key features of each style into our transcription. We then decided to invite our school Drum Corps to accompany us for the last portion of the song to finish things off with a bang! It was a fun challenge changing from style to style in a single song, and we really enjoyed writing the extra “nuances” to really made each style unique. Recording live off the floor was also a new challenge for most of the students, so there were so many excellent learning opportunities in this project that we were able to take advantage of. We would like to thank Mr. Francis for helping with the video editing, Ms. Tench and her Dance class for helping with the video-graphing, and Mr. Buchan and his Choir for helping with the recording and set-up. We hope you enjoy “Treat You Better” in 6 different styles.
Collingwood is an independent school located in West Vancouver. We have a large selection of music classes including a variety of choirs, bands, strings, and a drum line. The Senior Jazz band in the video consists of Grade 10-12 students and the Drum Corps consists of students from Grade 8-12. All students were involved in the transcription and arranging process. Should we be lucky enough to win this competition, we hope that the CBC can redirect the prize to a much more in-need East Vancouver school so that more students in our community can enjoy the same opportunity that we had in recording this song for the competition.
