Kayleigh Walton was born and raised on the North Shore, beginning dance at a young age. Impressed by Miss Carry-Lynn, a ballet instructor at her local rec-center, she followed Miss Carry-Lynn to the Vanleena Dance Academy. There at the mere age of six she was, “introduced to almost every type of dance including, Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Hip-HOP and Musical Theatre”. Later she moved to Shift Academy, where she dances presently. She is currently engaged in Hip-Hop, two types of Jazz, three Lyrical, two Contemporary and two Ballets. Now part of the high-performance dance program, she dedicates upwards of 20 hours per week to her dancing endeavors.
Kayleigh revealed that she has a rather peculiar place, which has influenced her pursuit of dance - her family’s kitchen. “I find that many nights when my whole family is gathered in the kitchen making dinner with the radio going, it makes me just want to get into the studio and start to improv.” She explains that improv is her favorite form of dancing expression because it allows her to indulge freely in the flow of music through with her body and express herself without limitation. She also enjoys Hip-hop as a creative medium because its expressive technique has bestowed upon her a great stress-reliever.

In addition to dance, Kayleigh also finds time for other hobbies including dirt biking, mountain biking as well as enjoying time with her family outdoors. Despite her incredible range of talent and interests, Kayleigh expressed, “My art is my life...and dance is kind of like a sibling. Although this may sound odd, if you think about it, I have grown up with dance...I love it even when it proves difficult”. Kayleigh encourages fellow dancers and artists to travel to gain insight into other performances and garner experience.
Some may be surprised to learn that even though Kayleigh has an affinity for dance, she has expressed a desire to potentially pursue law or interior design in the future. We wish Kayleigh good luck with her your future endeavours. Be sure to watch Kayleigh grace the stage during the upcoming Student Choreography Show this December!
