If you ever want to look for Cindy Cai, do not hesitate to go directly to the art studios at Collingwood. She might be working on her concentration in AP Studio Art, editing images in Photo 12, creating digital designs in Graphic Design, speaking at a Student Art Committee meeting, or listening to an Art History lecture.
Cindy Cai is a talented grade 12 art student who is heavily involved with the Collingwood art department. She recalls creating art from a very young age, ever since she first learned to use pencil and paper to draw. She is the third daughter in her very artistic family, where both her elder sisters are art students as well. Cindy believes that she is much influenced by her sisters, and a lot of inspiration for her art has came from them. Besides art, Cindy also enjoys skiing and playing video games.

Being skilled in a variety of mediums, including the traditional forms of painting and drawing, digital graphic design, and photography, Cindy expresses no preference over any particular type of medium. To her, her choice of medium always depends on the concept of her piece. She sees art as a way for her to tell stories with art that she usually doesn’t tell in real life, and she is never afraid to incorporate things she cares about personally into her art. In fluent English, she states that she’s “not good at English,” and needs the help of art to express herself. Therefore, it is no surprise that her favourite artistic genre is stylized and slightly abstract, which she describes as allowing her “to express more feelings”.
Cindy’s art has been exhibited at art galleries in West Vancouver, as well as at St. George’s School and York House. Her work has also been hung at a Rhode Island School of Design summer camp art exhibition. Being already such an accomplished artist, Cindy hopes that she can draw faster and take more risks in her art. To budding artists, her advice is that if you decide to walk down the path of art, it’s important to have persistence and believe in yourself. You will run into many challenges and face criticism, to which, she suggests that one should consider these criticisms, but don’t always listen to them.
When asked what her goal in art is, Cindy laughed and replied jokingly with “to stay alive with my earning as an artist.” She wishes to continue pursuing art in post-secondary studies, and to hopefully enter a career related to art. We congratulate Cindy upon receiving an offer from the University of Chicago for Painting, and we wish her the best of luck and success in her future endeavours.
