Sage Ryu is a 10th Grade student at Collingwood who has a deep passion for band. She loves the idea of playing in an ensemble as a flutist and appreciates band programs offered at Collingwood.
In past years, Sage was involved in studio arts, but more recently, she has developed an interest in music and the performing arts. Sage began playing the piano when she was very young but decided to transition to flute in Grade 5. Joining band was an impulse, but she would never back out of this decision today because she has become invested in music. She states, “Without the piano, I would have never been interested in music in the first place.”
When asked why she likes music, she replies: “In my opinion, music is more expressive than visual arts. When you combine with a group of people, everything is amazing.” To Sage, band as a mass is a wonderful experience, but she would also like to take on solos within their performances when the music allows for it. She gives realistic advice to budding musicians that they should start with either the flute, the instrument she plays, or the saxophone.

Sage’s favourite genre of music is jazz. Especially when the flute is put into the composition, jazz becomes a more wholesome experience. In band, she prefers playing pieces with aesthetic or unique harmonies or compositions in a minor key, which is often displayed in jazz.
The band performed in the grad concert this year as well as in some school assemblies. Sage also participated in the band trip to New York City, where the group performed in a festival. In addition, she played the flute in the Fall Concert or the Spring Concert last school year. Unfortunately, these performances are not available since they were not meant to be recorded. However, photos of Sage playing in the concerts are available.
In the future, Sage will continue to improve as a flutist in band, but she will use the flute only as a hobby. As well, she will be playing in the Christmas assembly.
