Jesse Park, a current grade 12 student, is an integral part of both the music and drama community here at Collingwood. A proud lifer, Jesse has been involved in creative pursuits at our school since as long as he can remember.
Jesse credits his family for being a strong influence in his life. His mother and brother are both professional musicians; his mother is an extraordinarily talented player of numerous musical instruments, and his brother Austin plays piano and voice professionally at venues like the Fairmont Pacific Rim and the Gotham Steak House. “I see what they do with music and many kinds of art, and I aspire to be similar,” Jesse says.
For Jesse, art has the unique ability of being able to transmit creativity to others, and allows them to interpret and enjoy the artist’s imagination. This, in his view, applies to all kinds of art forms, be it visual, musical, theatrical, or literary. He finds it very fun to express himself in this way, and feels that he is very lucky to have the opportunities to do so.
When asked about his advice for aspiring artists, Jesse emphasizes self-motivation and persistence as the key to succeeding in art. According to him, it is absolutely vital to take initiative, and take advantage of the many opportunities we are given to chase our dreams. “I’ve been playing piano for over 10 years now, and acting for the last five or so,” Jesse says, “On top of anything else technical, the most important thing to do if you want to become an artist is to have an active imagination; and above all else, practice.”

Music-wise, Jesse is open to all kinds of music. He quite enjoys upbeat music such as pop or techno, but he has also been part of the jazz band for many years and often listens to jazz music as well as many other types of music. “I think there are many great genres of music, and so it’s very difficult for me to choose one.” Jesse says.
Jesse indicates that his future aspirations definitely include art, and that he is very passionate about the possibility of working in game design. For him, it symbolizes a way to express creativity in an unprecedented way, in that it combines music, art, film, animation, and many other factors in one concise, entertaining method of expression that is accessible by all sorts of audiences. Though it does involve a fairly technical aspect, he believes that part of the magic of game-making is putting together all of the different assets, which involves an understanding of many different arts. All of us here at Arts Mag wish him a successful and happy future doing what he loves!
