Meet Manreet Dhaliwal, the designer of Collingwood’s 2019 grad hoodies. The idea was suggested to her by her peer Summer Sprenger, who had seen a Pacman design online. Manreet thought that the Pacman design was a great way to represent our grad class as “we’ve all played Pacman or some other video game” and that “it’s something that was a part of most people’s childhoods and applied to most of the grad class”. She took this suggestion and made the design her own by using adobe illustrator.
Manreet especially wants to thank Mr. Francis for introducing her to graphic design, which has now become her preferred way to create art. She also used her graphic design skills to create the images on this year’s grad hats and grey t-shirts. Two of her pieces, a map of Vancouver featuring fading images of herself and a graphic design project entitled “Designer Babies”, were featured in last year’s yearbook. In addition, she is the creator of byebyeblemish.ca, a skincare website aimed at helping those who suffer with acne.

Though Mr. Francis played a role in Manreet’s journey with art, she gives her mom credit for inspiring her from a young age to pursue her passions. Her mom’s love of art lit a spark for Manreet, introducing her to a world of creativity. Though Manreet enjoys creating art in her free time, she sees it as more than just a hobby; she loves that visual art is more than just a physical piece, that it has the power to unify people. She encourages upcoming artists to reach out of their comfort zones and try new things, while remembering that art is something you’re doing for yourself, not to please others.
