Meet Yasmin Azizi, a Grade 9 student at Collingwood who has fiercely dedicated her life to dance. Since the mere age of 2, Yasmin began dancing regularly at a studio (and currently she is a member of Shift Dance Academy) and participates in competitions. In Grade 8, Yasmin joined the dance program at Collingwood and now stands out as a star.
Yasmin was born in a family of seven, with herself being the oldest. Although her family is large, her parents are extremely supportive of Yasmin’s dancing and encourages her to dedicate a great amount of time to her passion. In dance, Yasmin’s favourite style is jazz because of its speed. Other than dancing, she also plays field hockey. However, she claims that dancing leaves little time to do other activities.

Art is a means of expression and also a method of relaxation for Yasmin: “Art can express feeling and it’s also just a way to let it out,” she explains. She gives this advice to budding artists: “Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and take risks, because that’s how you’re going to improve.” Yasmin believes that taking chances during practices or sessions will help one become a better artist. In addition to practice,Yasmin continually seeks inspiration from others–both from those around her as well as famous dancers. Specifically, she watches videos of their performances and absorbs their technique. One particular dancer she really enjoys watching is Maddie Ziegler.
Yasmin is very proud of all of her past performances. “We work so hard for them and we are always happy with the results,” she claims. In the future, Yasmin plans to continue dancing both at Collingwood and outside of school until she graduates. During university, she hopes to incorporate it into her daily life, like she is doing now.
In the near future, she is enthusiastically preparing for other competitions and hints for us to watch out for them.
