“Art is the process of representing the world in a beautified way,” states Yuki Xu, a passionate visual artist in Collingwood. She believes that real art requires the commitment of time and energy, as well as the expression of certain significance, which she constantly tries to achieve by painting with her heart.
Having been exposed to the boundless world of art at a very young age, Yuki admitted that she could not recall the first time she picked up her doodling pencil, because art has always been there with her as far as her mind can trace back. “I've always loved to draw since I was very little, ” Yuki recalls. “In my memory I have just always doodled and did arts & crafts - perhaps since the age of four or five.”
When inquired about her favorite medium, Yuki expressed that she enjoyed painting the most, either using oil or acrylic paint, because “there are so many visual possibilities one can achieve by using it”. For example, an oil painting may look extremely realistic with fine lines and smooth blending, or excessively bold with lustrous shades and captivating colors. Even a slight alteration of the brushstroke may result in a different texture, or create a new artistic appeal. Meanwhile, her most commonly used medium “has got to be just pencils and pencil crayons through day-to-day sketches”, as she describes. She enjoys even the most fundamental daily practices, calling them an approach to “convey ideas through a method that [she] loves”.

As an open-minded artist, Yuki finds inspiration from an eclectic range of sources. “The most random and insignificant things can contribute to my brainstorming,” she says. She also finds herself browsing through social media to seek inspiration from different content creators. When asked about her favorite artist, Yuki expressed that it is difficult for her to pick one, because she regards most artists with equal respect, and appreciate the uniqueness of each art piece.
Yuki advises young artists to never give up their passion. “Discover what you love to do and keep doing it,” she says. “There is certainly a possibility for you to pursue a career in the art field if this is where your passion lies.”
Yuki herself is more than enthusiastic to transform her dreams into reality. She is planning to apply for an art school after graduating from Collingwood, and pursue her career as a designer. We look forward to seeing her as a designer someday!
