“Sometimes ideas develop by way of the look of a singular brush stroke, and sometimes via the façade of the portrayed subject or the fusion of the colors,” recalls Yuki Xu, when asked about her inspiration for her artwork. This grade 12 student has a firm grasp of her ideology in hand, striving to include forces in her creations that dip into a deeper level of intimacy in art. Instead of just having an aesthetic appeal, Yuki’s work conveys emotional meaning, significantly altering the definition of the piece entirely.
Recently, her focus has been entirely set on a drawing that “centers on the trans-generation connection between my grandmother and I.” Yuki goes on to describe how when she was growing up, she and her grandmother shared a close bond, inspiring her to this day. She also took the advice of her grandfather, a landscape painter and calligrapher, urging her to pursue her hobby of art.

Yuki enjoys using an appeal in her work called ‘Pathos’. Yuki defines pathos as “something may have a nice and pleasant look to it, but when the creator or the viewer relates to it beyond the surface level, such as via a personal connection, the art becomes much more cogent.”
Yuki has been an artistic soul all her life, even going as far as to say “I truly don’t remember a time when art was not a part of my daily routine.” When she tries to rectify her artistic interest, the image that comes to her mind immediately is that of “humid afternoons in China, where I hid myself away from the fierce heat and the melodies of cicadas, scribbling endlessly on the dining room table.”

“Everything can inspire me in some type of way — literally,” insists Yuki. She observes everything in an artistic angle, often wondering how she could recreate something, different mediums in mind. From day-to-day conversations to the value of infinity as gleamed from Calculus, Yuki ponders their artistic representations. “The value of infinity in Calculus got me pondering how perspective in art represents the infinite space that we see and how we choose to portray that through visual cues—and how one can manipulate such visual cues to distort such an unfathomable numerical value; Art History puts aesthetics immersed in the history of mankind in perspective: societies and time periods intertwining inspire me to explore ways to similarly portray and recreate our ancient earth and culture like millions have done in the past.”
Yuki participates in extracurricular activities outside of school, something that’s been happening in her life for a long time. At school, Yuki is also very proactive in terms of art. She attends a preparatory art & design studio, garnering experience and storing it away for the future. Ever the astute creator, Yuki aspires to pursue a career in art. She is currently preparing a portfolio to present to secondary education admissions for a major in design. “I'm not extremely certain what field of design I'd like to pursue in the future, but I know that I will get to experiment with all kinds of mediums and tools during the core curriculum provided in first-year and hopefully discover what I’m the most passionate towards.”
