Selina Hung is full of passion and skill, playing various instruments while fulfilling her other dreams and hobbies. Selina is dedicated to playing instruments like the clarinet, bass clarinet, and bari saxophone. She especially favours the bass clarinet and the bari saxophone.
Selina’s skill and talent can be well justified as she has played these instruments for quite some time. She has played the clarinet for seven years, the bass clarinet for five years, and the bari saxophone for four years, respectively. Selina originally got into music in Grade 5 when she participated in band and started with the clarinet. Later, when she came to Collingwood, she joined the school band in grade 7 and was quickly paired with the bass clarinet by her band teacher. Selina swiftly decided to get into the bari saxophone when Smith insisted on a volunteer to play the saxophone. She especially enjoyed the sound and melody the bari sax produced. Selina has participated in a few contests every year with the school: Kiwani, Con Brio, and the Idaho Jazz Festival.
When asked her favourite pieces of music and instruments to play, she says she prefers “Moanin’” or “Better Git it in Your Soul,” both by Charles Mingus. And as for her favourite instruments, it comes down to the bass clarinet and the bari saxophone. In Selina's experience, while both instruments do not play a significant role in a band, they produce some of the most beautiful melodies on the occasions they do stand out.
Though Selina much enjoys playing these instruments, she considers them more as hobbies. One of her major interests involves snow sports as she especially loves and appreciates snowboarding, spending at least 20-30 days in Whistler every year!
Selina is a multi-talented artist, playing various instruments with great skill and effort. She has been an irreplaceable member of our Junior Jazz Band, putting in full participation and strives to do her best every time an opportunity comes her way. Selina's contributions and determination towards her interests, including the Collingwood’s Arts branch, will be remembered as she moves forward in the future.
