Susan Zhao, a graduating student in Collingwood, finds her strongest passion in the field of music, within the deep and rich sound of a cello.
An unexpected accident sparked her interest in playing cello. Originally intending to learn violin, Susan was informed that her violin teacher had no extra teaching time. This unfortunate outcome led to her fortunate acquaintance with the violin teacher's husband, a revered cello player in Vancouver. Intrigued by the rich yet unique sound of the instrument, Susan decided to learn cello as a hobby. As she gradually began playing more challenging pieces, she delightfully noticed herself producing more gorgeous harmonies. Her initial tinge of casual interest had grown into an irreplaceable passion.

She embraces her enthusiasm for cello by dedicating her time to the school orchestra, as she feels thrilled contributing to the euphonious symphonies created by a combination of instruments. Besides, being surrounded by the musical atmosphere improves her intonation, rhythm, and dynamic. Susan has been a part of various orchestras ever since elementary school. Her valuable experience led to her decision in joining the Collingwood school orchestra in grade 9. Having contributed her effort to a significant extent, she admitted honorably that she was one of the "founding cellists" – the first cellists who made the orchestra possible!
Outside of the Collingwood community, Susan is an active member of Vanstrings, a renowned string-instrument ensemble in Vancouver. She strives to exploit her musical skills by playing in senior homes every other week. It is truly a valuable experience for Susan, whose heart brightens every time she notices the smiles on the seniors’ faces upon hearing her music.
Susan’s passion for music is not confined to playing the cello. Her diverse interests in music includes classical pop, house, R&B, electronic, band, jazz, hard-core rock, rap, and even more. She especially admires Yo-Yo Ma, an eminent musician and cello player well known in the world of music. She even has a playlist consisting solely of his songs, as his music has deeply inspired her.
Susan has recently made her final Collingwood performance at the end-of-year school concert. Hopefully you had the chance to see her among the cellists!
