You may have heard of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan, and now there may be another in the pantheon of jazz singers - Luca Fukuyo - the Collingwood singer of renown. Listening to her velvet voice will transport you to smokey clubs or the era of big-band jazz. But this is not the only string she has in her bow. As you can read below, Luca is a polymath with vocals as one of her many talents.
Luca Fukuyo was born in Sydney, Australia in 2006, and has been at Collingwood since Kindergarten. Over the years at the school she has not only been a singer but a boxer and a sportswoman. Her first foray into performing in front of an audience was when she joined the grade 7 Musical and then sang a solo at the Grade 7 Commencement. Her talent shone and when she got to Morven she began to sing with the Senior Chamber Choir in only Grade 9, which was a huge honour. Performing was obviously in her blood and she acted in the Crucible, and to finish off her Grade 9 year she sang a solo in the Morven Jazz Cabaret which was widely praised. Luca is a strong lover of art, stating, “I really like the way it makes me feel and I connect with each piece of music”. She also sang in the Kiwanis Music Festival, and brought home 3 Gold and Silver medals, and even performed in the Semi-Finals of the B.C Talent Search. Over the years, Luca has developed as an artist, overcoming stage fright and becoming the powerhouse singer she is today. She finds that her family has been her biggest motivation, and have pushed her to become a better performer and singer, by believing in herself as much as they believe in her. She also plays piano, basketball and volleyball - we have to wonder when she sleeps!
Luca thinks of the arts as an expression of feelings or personality - as she says, “when people write songs they express their feelings through storytelling, and your emotions and personality come through when you sing them.” She thinks art and singing as a whole are a way, “to get away from things like academics and athletics, and go do arts, or listen to music, get away from all the stress and be in my own world. It helps me cope with stress and anxiety.” Her advice to all those budding artists, or singers is wise: “I think everyone just has to be patient with themselves, I still havent got there, and it takes a long time to learn your voice in singing. Try your best and put all your effort into it and, although it is not perfect, be happy with what you have done.” She has definitely developed her voice over the years, and you can hear this in her recordings included in this article “Everyone should know that they are on different levels, and will always think someone is better than them, but they shouldn't beat themselves up about their perception that they are not as good, and work hard. Do the best they can do. And I don't think people should compare themselves to other people.” As shown by this statement, Luca believes it is important to learn to sing and find your own voice without getting bogged down in comparisons to others.
Luca is someone with big plans, including becoming a doctor, and to continue to sing in her spare time. “I am not pursuing a job in singing, I want to be a doctor with maybe anside thing for singing. I might join a choir in University and participate in plays, and I am thinking about doing this in the future.” She also talks about how her experience in singing has affected her in her current life, saying, “I think singing has helped me grow as a person and improve my leadership and people skills. It’s fun to meet different people and sing with them and learn to become a team player. I had a role as a leader in Grade 9 choir, and when everyone grows up they become a role model and a leader for other students.”
In conclusion, Luca Fukuyo is an amazing artist; overcoming stage-fright, being invited to Senior Chamber Choir in only Grade 9 and playing basketball and volleyball at the same time - she is inspiring! She has contributed to our Collingwood community for many years, and she helped me become a better artist, and a better person with her advice and guidance.
