Just recently Collingwood had its sixth annual Public Speaking Day, where a record number of over two hundred students presented their speeches at the grade rounds and finals. The categories were Ted Talks, Persuasive Speeches, Dramatic Monologues, Interpretative Reads, and Slam Poems.
This year a new award was created for Ms Julia Clarke, an avid supporter of the Public Speaking and Debate programs at Collingwood for over thirty years. An outstanding presenter from Morven’s middle school will now receive this award every year. This year the prestigious award was given to Rose Ghannad, grade nine, for her persuasive speech on why women are paid less than men.
Cascade Campbell in Grade Twelve was awarded as the Top Serious Speaker on her speech about First Nations in Canada, and Top Humorous Speaker was given to Emilie Haniak on her speech about a mystery which had taken place at Collingwood school. Several other first-place category winners presented at the assembly at the end of the day. We have included some of these speeches here for you to enjoy again.
Congratulations to everyone who presented on the Public Speaking Day and for everyone’s participation in speeches this year. This skill is an attribute to have for job interviews. Despite being one of the top fears in the world, practice makes perfect. A special thank you to all of the English teachers at Collingwood for guiding us and all judges for making this day possible.
