AM : What is your background ?
PS : I was born and raised in Vancouver in a family with very little passion for pursuing art, with the exception of my sister’s former career goal in fashion design.
AM : What are your interests and hobbies other than art ?
PS : Competitive swimming was an activity I pursued from a very young age up until Grade 10. It was one of my few hobbies that taught me discipline and consistency. I also occasionally practice guitar during my spare time.
AM : What is your philosophy or views on art ? What does « art as a means of expression» mean to you? Do you have advice to budding artists?
PS : For me, art is simply a way of expressing oneself through interpretations of concepts and ideas. It may be built off of the artist’s interpretation of a concept or idea and performed/produced in a unique form. The use of metaphors as a method of representation is very common in all forms of art. Understanding the power and significance of metaphors can allow aspiring artists to expand their horizons of expression in the arts.
AM : Who or what has influenced you ? How?
PS : My artistic interests are primarily influenced by my inner emotions which I develop throughout my life experiences. When I was younger, I used to bottle up my emotions, which turned out to be an unhealthy life decision. Photography (and guitar) serve as a therapeutic outlet for me.
AM : How would you describe your style, as an artist ?
PS : As a technical answer, I’ve been having a growing style interest in long exposure photography. This technique allows me to capture very abstract photos (for example, the subject in the photo is a translucent silhouette, or the headlights of oncoming traffic are caught in motion) in which very little or no Photoshop is needed. Overall, I enjoy capturing abstract photos that are not quite possible to witness with the naked eye; this technique allows me to do that.
AM : Can you please comment on the work that is being featured in this issue of Arts Mag ?
PS : Outside of Collingwood, I haven’t been featured in any exhibitions. My work is primarily just promoted on Instagram at the moment, though I’ve had my work virtually featured on some very big Instagram pages that promote local artists. The Instagram pages that have promoted my work include VancityBuzz, Narcity Vancouver, Vancity, and Fotocatchers.
AM : What are your future aspirations ? Does it include art?
PS : I plan on starting my own website in which I may promote my photography in a more professional manner. I might also be interested in having my photography on sale for anyone who would like to order a printed copy. I also intend on using this general practice to help my business career interests, whether it be helping my family company’s marketing through on-site or event photography and visuals for our clients, or helping with new ad designs on Photoshop. There are a lot of useful applications that photography and photo-editing software programs have to offer in the field of business, which I am pursuing.
