For grade 11 Amber Chen, art is as simple as a way of expressing what she likes.
Although Amber recalls creating art from an early age, with her father being an artist, it is hard to believe from looking at her masterful artwork that she has touched digital art only starting from two years ago. Aside from drawing, Amber plays cello, plays piano, and does horseback riding. She is also involved in the Collingwood art community through orchestra and art courses like Art Enriched and Yearbook.
When asked who her favourite artists are, Amber replied that they are the famous Hayao Miyazaki and Makoto Shinkai. Needless to say, a lot of her inspiration comes from Japanese manga and anime. Her preferred mediums are watercolour, and of course, digital art, because they are “less dependent on technical skills” and let her “express things more freely”. Her favourite style of art is Chibi (a Japanese slang word meaning “short person” or “small person”), because “it’s cute”

A very special aspect of Amber’s art is that she has managed to combine art with communication. During my interview with Amber, she mentioned several times that a lot of her inspiration comes from her friends, and she really enjoys discussing art with other artists. She has slowly built her skills through hours of practice driven by passion, drawing subjects such as her friends, family, favourite K-pop idols, and actors. Amber has shared this art with other fans and artists as her artwork has been showcased in many offline fan meetings. Interestingly, Amber is most proud of her ability to draw quickly. She can finish up to two or three pieces in one day when she is especially productive.
To budding young artists, Amber suggests that they should never give up and they should always keep practicing, and keep in mind to develop their own individual styles of art. Her own path to mastering digital art is definitely motivating to other artists.
In the future, Amber plans on becoming a med student. However, she will definitely keep drawing subjects that she is passionate about. We look forward to seeing the new art pieces that Amber will present to us in the near future!
