Sanders Lee, a resident Collingwood intellectual well-known for his witty and apathetic humour, is equally as musically talented as he is cognitively probing. Sanders is quite the musical connoisseur, his talents spanning the drums, piano and the melodica (a blow-organ, key harmonica.) He also has extensive experience with both the trumpet and violin. A member of the band and jazz combo for as many years as he can remember, he can’t recall a time when his life was without music,“It’s always been a consequential part of my life, a constant that seemed to pervade its way throughout my life and offer me a sense of solace in such a busy world.”
He cites his favorite song as Queen’s, “Don’t Stop Me Now,” claiming to be a closet fan of 80’s rock. Other favorite artists include Michael Jackson, The Beatles, and currently, the falsetto pipes of Sam Smith as well as the ever-controversial Kanye West. His music tastes span a wide variety of genres and he states that it’s the diversity that exists within in music that has helped to pique his interest in the art of sound.
When asked what initially sparked his interest in becoming musically inclined, he reluctantly admits that it was under familial influence that he first pursued the piano years ago. However, music has morphed into somewhat of a greater entity beyond a hobby that his parents made him partake in. “Something that started out of a forced means of participation actually turned into something in which has had a profound impact on me. I am passionate about music because it allows me to connect with others.” Music is no longer simply an activity but rather a hobby through which has evoked divine inspiration.
The drums, which he asserts as his favourite instrument to play, began out of necessity when his friends were in need of a drummer and he found himself volunteering for the job. That is perhaps one of the most intriguing facets of Sanders’s magnetic personality, his undying, unrelenting support for his friends and those around him. Through this instinctual need to help others, Sanders has been able to find and channel his energy through music as a way to empower himself and embrace a pursuit that exists for himself.
