While enjoying your favourite muffins and cupcakes, have you ever felt that maybe they just looked a bit dull? Maybe this thought will urge you to make them into something that not only taste pleasant, but also look attractive. If that is the case, you should probably try bakery arts (that is, if you know how to bake, of course). Katarina Jurik, a grade twelve art student at Collingwood School, is someone who “practises” bakery arts, turning baked goods into “super cute stuff.”
Of mixed European origin, Katarina’s father is from Slovakia and her family on her mother’s side is from England. In her free time, Katarina likes to work out and to be outside. She is also a visual artist who has been taking AP art courses since grade eleven. As for bakery, she says, “Baking used to be a very important part [to me], but not as much as I've gotten older. I will still make cupcakes for special times.” Quite similar to the nature of bakery arts, which is to turn bakery into more enjoyable and cuter shapes, to Katarina, art is a means to express her feelings by turning them into something visual; this is also part of the reason why she loves visual art so much.
Though not sure what has influenced her to bake, Katarina says, “Ever since I was young, I loved being in the kitchen baking and being a part of making food. And as I grew up, I took a class on how to make better cakes and I found that I was really quite good at it. I tried to use that talent that I had to share with those that weren't as fortunate by giving them to a local homeless shelter. As well, I like to give a little joy and thanks to the teachers once and a while.”
Looking to the future, Katarina plans to pursue her education in university and ultimately become an architect. “I know it's not so much as a baker, but the creativity I used in baking will definitely be used.” Best of luck to Katarina!
