While walking past the band room at school, you can always hear musicians hard at work playing the music they love. One talented trombonist clearly stands out through the symphony of sound; Casey-Thomas Burns is a diligent musician who has played passionately for Collingwood throughout the past few years. Casey is a lifer at Collingwood whose interests span far beyond the musical realm. She is a track and field thrower, a volleyball player, and an actress. Despite these ranges of hobbies, music has always been Casey’s true calling.
Music has always been a key part of Casey’s life and she attributes its role largely to the people who have influenced her through this form. Band and choir teachers, artists, friends, even those who she hasn’t yet met are inspirations for her to continue playing. In particular, Casey cites Mr. Buchan and Mr. Smith as two teachers who “are both so knowledgeable about music and are so completely committed to what they do” that they have heavily impacted her and her future in music.
Stylistically, Casey is very open to all genres of music and believes it to be important to listen to different styles and genres in order to develop as an artist. Her experience in various genres of music has helped her perform successfully in her recent shows: Collingwood’s annual Spring Concert, the popular drum line assembly, the Gatsby Party, and the Arts Exhibition Show.
Next year, Casey will be attending the Jazz Studies program at Capilano University and she gives this advice to fellow aspiring musicians: “Play or enjoy whatever music you want, without regards to what other people may think. There is no universal standard for what makes a song good, so if you like it, play it.” Thank you, Casey for all that you have done at Collingwood and we wish you the best on all your future endeavours!
