Amongst the student body of Collingwood, a true musician resides – enhancing his prodigious prowess as a pianist, trumpeter, and singer. Ilhan Saferali – grade nine – sustained this musical vocation at the young age of four, transfigured by a DVD featuring this particular art, and, after persistently watching, prompted his request for lessons. Ilhan has since immersed himself into the musical culture, nevertheless retaining a love for socializing, movies, and “anything entertaining.” Ilhan has likewise developed a secure sense of music and all that it entails, proclaiming the firm philosophy that music should be felt, and not just read. Ilhan strives to achieve this profundity in his own work, endeavoring to leave the audience in genuine awe, and with an unspoken insight into his inner emotions.
“I want to walk off the stage knowing I made an impression,” says Ilhan.
Claiming to lack in academic success, Ilhan deems music to be a form of a safe haven for those inept in other fields, as one cannot plunder the abstract beauty of music. Ilhan has already undertaken a multitude of concerts, and therefore intends to pursue his impressive abilities post-Collingwood. He is particularly interested in pursuing jazz – a partiality perhaps stimulated by one of Ilhan’s numerous idols, Miles Davis. An extraordinary musician and influential idol who underwent five generations of jazz, Miles Davis inspires those to come. To further prompt Ilhan’s interest, this distinct musical genre exercises ample freedom, and allows Ilhan to express himself. Jazz also represents creativity; thus, it is designated for unique individuals such as Ilhan. As Ilhan continues to engage so thoroughly in this forte, we can accurately define him as an extraordinary musician.
