I had the pleasure of interviewing Collingwood student Emilie Haniak. Emilie comes from a supportive family, being surrounded by her loving mother, father, and brother. Emilie has never taken an art class outside of school, but she has been lucky enough to pick up different art techniques from many places over the years. Aside from art, Emilie is very interested in basketball and swimming; and some of her favourite things to do are baking and cooking.
Emilie’s philosophy on art is that art is a medium through which you can let off steam and relax. She also mentions that art is a great way to focus while doing something she loves. Personally for Emilie, art is a way to express herself, and she finds fulfillment in creating her artistic pieces. Emilie’s advice to other artists is to always be confident in yourself and to never get discouraged early on in what could end up being a masterpiece. There is no right or wrong way of creating art. It is perceived differently to each individual.
Emilie has been influenced by a lot of people, including famous artists such as Monet and Renoir. She has also been inspired by her friends who encourage her and give her thought-provoking ideas.
This creative grade nine student loves to use various mediums such as paints, charcoal, and pencil crayons. For Emilie, acrylic paints and oil paints are fun because they are easy to play around with and to move across the canvas fluently. Emilie also loves smudging and drawing with charcoal. Another medium Emilie uses is a classic pencil crayon that gives her pieces a more precise look. Emilie does not have a favourite style of art because she loves to try out everything. However, if she had to pick her favourite styles, they would be still life, portraits, and impressionism because she loves to express what she sees in her own unique way.
When I asked Emilie to comment on her work in general, as well as her work that is featured in Arts Mag, she replied that most of her works are drawings and paintings of subjects that she deeply cares about. She has a piece of work in progress right now based on the content and colour scheme of Renoir. For her current project, she drew portraits of Syrian children and has sent them back to the children. “This piece was amazing to create because I got to use a lot of mediums that I don’t commonly use. I also love drawing portraits, especially if they get to brighten up someone’s day”.
Emilie also spoke about her future aspirations. She said that as far as her future goes, she has no idea where she will end up, but she hopes that she will still be creating art, as it is something she is extremely passionate about.
