Collingwood has quite the array of artists, all of whom constantly empower and inspire the students, faculty, and school community. Perhaps one of the newest emerging artists would be Collingwood grade 12 student Caitlin Gordon. Throughout this year, Caitlin Gordon has been the creative genius behind the 2017-2018 yearbook, capturing beautiful images and acquiring a skill many wish to achieve.
Caitlin’s passion for photography stems from an interest in capturing memories and moments. She loves the idea of conveying energy and emotion through her images, as well as telling a story to those who view them. Caitlin aspires to illustrate the sense of collaboration and comradery among students through her photos. Her interest in photography has grown throughout the year, with a love for yearbook and a knack for cameras driving her to expand her knowledge, thus gaining a new hobby.
Caitlin was always fascinated by photography -- especially throughout high school. However, being a highly well-rounded student -- taking a rigorous course load, involved in numerous clubs, and participating in lots of service -- Caitlin never got the opportunity to take a photo course or follow up on her curiosity. This year she decided that was going to change. Upon taking yearbook, Gordon learnt about the art of photography. Everything she currently knows it self-taught and has been obtained through practice, determination, and optimism.

Caitlin currently shoots her photographs with a Nikon D50. Through trial and error, and the help of photographer Ryan Tobin, Caitlin has been able to broaden her horizons and learn the ins and outs of taking the perfect shot. In yearbook, Caitlin takes photos using the Nikon D750 -- a high quality camera that has helped her gain more experience and knowledge.
Most of Caitlin’s photos consist of nature shots, or photos of people (specifically students at Collingwood). In the future, Caitlin hopes to develop her current photography styles, as well as learn how to take portraits. Gordon has been accepted to the very prestigious school, Wellesley College, in Massachusetts and she hopes to take photography classes while at university, and continue to develop her newly-found skills.
Caitlin credits teachers Fiona Morris and John Furlong for helping her step out of her comfort zone and try something new. Additionally, she thank Ryan Tobin for teaching her everything she knows and helping her understand the complex art that is photography.
Caitlin’s goal while taking a photo is to give viewers something to think about. She has always found it interesting to pick up on the energy of the people, and the objects that make the photo the way it is. Caitlin is proud of learning a new skill, and doing what she loves. Inspired by photography -- she has created an Instagram account where she posts her latest pictures.
Caitlin believes life is like a camera. Through photography, she has learned to focus on what is important, to capture the good times, develop from the negatives, and if all else fails, to take another shot.
