Collingwood School is blessed with many multi-talented students, whose passions take them in a myriad of directions. One such talented student is Kristine Falck in Grade 12. Many students may know Kristine for her passion for chemistry and volunteering, but may not know about her blossoming talent as a photographer. Kristine has always loved the arts, having been involved in dance for many years and playing the flute in the band.
Kristine enjoys photography immensely and derives great pleasure in continually experimenting with photographic techniques, never setting limits on her creativity. As she aptly summarizes her thoughts, “photography is an art medium, which encapsulates the idiom that beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. Over the years, Kristine has taken pictures of many different subject matters, but keeps coming back to her love of photographing nature, landscapes and architecture. Perhaps this was a natural result from her families’ trips to the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks and New York City. Kristine says these destinations are so visually enriching you can take advantage of so many different artistic opportunities with your camera.
When asked who her favourite photographer is, she extols the talents of Ansel Adams for his depth of knowledge and dedication to his craft. His black and white photography is timeless and serves as an inspiration for her landscape photography. She has great admiration for his body of work that was created in an era before digital cameras and editing enhancement capabilities existed, “old school” as she describes it.
This fall, Kristine was proud that her photograph “Freighter Keyhole” was featured on the Visual Arts display wall at school. Photography has allowed her to express how she sees the world through a lens, and she highly recommends taking advantage of all the opportunities Collingwood School has to offer in the Visuals Arts Department.
Aside from photography, Kristine enjoys being an active member of the Collingwood community, including her role as Editor-in-Chief for the Ad Verum, student newspaper and a member of the senior tennis team. She is looking forward to continuing her photographic pursuits throughout Grade 12 and in college.
