Marina Diamandis of the indie band “Marina and the Diamonds” once said, “I love natural beauty, and I think it’s your best look, but I think make-up as an artist is so transformative.”
Zuzia Smulewicz is an emerging makeup artist, clearly on the rise to stardom. She is not only my friend and an avid fan of “Marina and the Diamonds,” but a girl brimming with immense talent and passion. She credits Instagram and YouTube for feeding her desire to take her makeup to the next level. In grade seven, she loved messing around with make-up, experimenting purely through trial and error, and delighting in the way it could completely transform her look. “Also, I’ve always loved Halloween, so I naturally became drawn to make-up and costumes.”
Zuzia’s true talents lie in her uncanny ability to recreate gruesome cuts and intricate patterns with her face as the canvas. “Watching movies and looking at pictures of celebrities from photo shoots got me really into glam makeup. Then I started following a bunch of Instagram accounts and I really wanted to try it out myself.”
The kind of make-up she most enjoys now is a combination of “face painting, special effects, gore and glamour.” When asked about her favourite special effect that she has ever executed, she falters: “That’s difficult, probably one of my recent ones of half skull and half human because it allowed me to meld all forms of make-up and effects into one.”

Zuzia became so passionate about make-up because it allowed her to take her mind off things and to get lost in the moment, “I also love being able to see how I can transform myself and see how others react.”
She explains passionately about how all-encompassing the process of doing make-up is. “When I'm in the mood, I will sit down and work for hours without checking my phone or focusing on anything else until I am done. I've never really found an activity like that where I could 100% focus on it for hours and enjoy it, until I discovered make-up. Sometimes I sit down and start from scratch with no inspiration and whatever I end up with expresses what I was feeling or whatever mood I was in.”
She plans to pursue make-up artistry in the future, with ambitions of working backstage on movies, musicals, and any production. She also plans to circulate her pictures around the internet, posting and trying to get her work known. Possible plans include starting her own YouTube channel. Well, with talent like that, I know that she will go far in whatever she sets her mind to! Keep an eye out, because she is undoubtedly destined for great things.
