Currently in grade eleven, Amy Young has never failed to capture the attention of other people with her artwork. She discovered her talent and interest in art when she was in elementary school. Her compelling determination to avoid being “the worst drawer among the girls in her class” was the spark leading to her success. As she grew older, Amy began to wonder. She began to uncover the different emotions she had, and she wanted to express them. Art became her way of self-expression.
As a strong visual artist, Amy identifies her sources of inspiration to be the various artists she follows on Instagram, Tumblr, and Youtube. Exposed to different styles and techniques, Amy is always eager to experiment and to play around with all the mediums she comes across. Amy’s preference in artistic medium is oil painting. From oil painting, she gains the freedom to layer and texture paints that cannot be achieved with other mediums. This freedom gives her a sense of character and life.

Amy has worked on a broad range of art pieces, from still life to imaginative. One of her featured pieces, the sculpture, demonstrates the amount of patience and care needed in order to achieve such intricate details. Although she is able to exhibit her ability in her artwork, the biggest challenge for Amy is drawing from the imagination. Whether it is the painful hours spent depicting the correct anatomy or the unavoidable feeling of emptiness on the page, drawing without reference is an exhausting practice. Even so, she still believes that “you’ll suck at the beginning, but if you keep doing it, you’ll suck a tiny bit less”.
We hope to see Amy continue pursuing her passion in art, as she is not only an artist in Collingwood, but also an inspiration.
