“Art is a way to express your emotions, your ideas, and you have to have passion if you want to achieve anything.”
For artist and performer Chloe Wang, moving to Canada from Shanghai was a difficult experience as it would have been for anyone to leave one’s home country and to adapt to a totally new community. Art became her escape route, a universal way of expression to leave whatever problems she had. In addition to being a strong academic student, Chloe is multitalented in the arts, having been an avid piano player since age three and a dancer since age five.

“I just simply become happy when I do art and dance,” she reveals.
For Chloe, her favourite style of art is abstract. Unlike depictions of realistic objects, abstract art, she believes, can actually express emotions very well. As artists Monet, Delaunay and Degas have taught her, “adding your own self into your art” is crucial for Chloe in her art.

As for her dance life, she loves having the power to present her individual style and attitude in her choreography, and this is inevitably what makes her dancing so unique and passionate. She confesses that she spends her free time watching videos of Urban Dance Camp for inspiration and sometimes for pure admiration. Defying the stereotype of Asian hip hop dancers obsessed with only KPop, Chloe uniquely prefers Indie bands.
As Chloe stated, “I like quieter music, but when I dance, I like to have really loud music to set my dancing mood.”

In everything she does, it is evident that Chloe does what she does not just for the sake of doing it, but because it is meaningful to her in some way. When asked about her future, it took no hesitation for Chloe to answer that she wanted to be an architect. Ever since she was little, Chloe was one of those kids who looked out the car window during a traffic jam, analyzing and admiring different buildings. And when Chloe realized she wanted a career with a healthy balance of the arts and the academics, architecture was her calling.
Inspired by architects Wright and Pei, her passion for architecture grew. Chloe strives to study architecture in Cornell after graduation. But will this young talented artist continue to pursue her passions of dance and art while juggling life after high school?
Her answer: “I don’t ever want to stop doing what I love to do.”
