Art is all around us. It is the conscious use of our imagination in creating visual, auditory, or performing works. Art can be expressed in many ways, such as the way we hold a paintbrush, the way we talk, and even the way we hold a cup. These are all our very own self-expressions.
Madeline Filewych was born and raised on the North Shore and has been part of Collingwood since kindergarten. She reveals her self-expression in both performing and visual arts. Her diverse artistic talents include dancing, drawing, painting, stitching, and photography. When asked as to which was her favourite form of art, she was torn for she had been engaged in all those activities her entire life. She first started dancing at the mere age of three when her mom enrolled her in dance classes. For most people, it is often hard to develop a growing interest in something that they are forced to do. However, this was not the case for Madeline. After starting school, she found herself enjoying dancing more and more, which lead to her decision to continue.

Despite being a talented performing artist, Madeline also devotes much time to her endeavors in the visual arts department. Although she had been drawing and painting for her entire life, she only began to paint seriously at age 14. She realized that art was a “really relaxing and a great way to spend a day”. As her love for art grows fonder and her understanding gets deeper, she finds herself loving impressionist’s paintings.
Her joy of painting comes mostly from the satisfaction she feels after completing a project. Painting, drawing, sketching, or even any form of visual art takes a tremendous amount of time, effort and dedication to achieve an artists’ desired result. For Madeline, when drawing, the most frustrating struggle and challenge has been the amount of time it takes to get the specific look she wants, which has particularly arose while employing the technique of shading. For those who often stress about completing an assignment, she advised, “Don’t give yourself high standards for what it should look like. It takes a lot of practice before you're going to make something that you're happy with - so don't get frustrated with yourself.”
In addition to showing immense dedication to the arts, Madeline is also an active volleyball player. During her free time, when she is not dancing or painting, she likes to bike or hang out with her friends.
Art is, as Madeline describes it, is an “expression”.
