As a dedicated musician, performer, student and athlete, Evelyn Tu is the epitome of hard work meeting talent.
Born and raised in West Vancouver, Evelyn first arrived at Collingwood in Grade Six, having previously attended Eagle Harbour Elementary School. She credits primary school with helping her develop the self-confidence and critical thinking she would continue to use in the future. After coming to Collingwood, Evelyn was quick to make her mark on not just the arts strand, but the athletic and academic strands as well. She has played various sports (such as soccer, volleyball, and basketball) throughout her years at Collingwood, and is currently taking AP Economics, AP Calculus AB, and AP Human Geography - both an impressive and intimidating workload for a grade 10 student.
“Music, to me, is like weaving an elaborate tapestry. Each note, rhythm, chord, is like a singular knot made, and the experience of enjoying music is like the entire motif.”
Evelyn has experience in many different realms of performing - she’s finished RCM 8 in piano and RCM 10 in flute. Although she wishes she could play piano more, she still spends time practising flute as well as training her voice - often up to four times a week, you can find her in the school’s lobby, the theatre, or the choir room. All the hard work, of course, isn’t for nothing: she believes that so much practice has really helped her grow and develop into the singer she is today: one who constantly aims for improvement and excellence.
Artists like Lewis Capaldi, Tate McCrae, and Ariana Grande have consistently served to inspire Evelyn. Despite this, she firmly believes that good art doesn’t necessarily come just from good artists, and thus enjoys listening to many different musicians from all over the world. She finds that having such broad music tastes has really helped to shape what she strives to achieve in her performances, whether it be a certain tone, or a certain creative liberty, like a run or specific melody.
Evelyn also finds emotional inspiration from the musicians she listens to. Channelling the feelings she gets from a certain lyric or chord, she uses these emotions to tell a story and further connect with her audience. Of the entire artistic process, performing is her favourite. All of the hard work and dedication pays off in the thrill of performing a piece. Another reason that Evelyn loves music is the pure uniqueness of the art. Different interpretations of a piece, different feelings towards a piece, and different experiences of the musician are all channelled into the performance, and all of this affects the way a person (the audience or the performer) feels towards the piece. In her words: “as the artist, it’s the joy and pride [in] making something beautiful that others enjoy.”
Keeping an open mind is an important aspect of Evelyn’s artistic process. For any aspiring artists, she emphasizes the vitality of exploring different kinds of music, and being open to new things will help to further enjoyment and skill in music.
Looking to the future, Evelyn doesn’t see a career in the arts but hopes she can continue to perform in years to come. In her eyes, appreciating art is appreciating the beauty in the world, and she hopes that it will continue to be a source of joy, calm and self-expression for her later on
