“I have not failed, I had just found another way that doesn’t work.”
Born in Culver City Los Angeles, Nikolai Osborn moved to Vancouver in 2008. He recalled coming to watch the play Farnsworth Invention when he was still in Wentworth, and it becoming one of his favorites. When he finally came to Morven in Grade 8, he auditioned for the Crucible with not much of hope of getting selected; But he was. And if that was the spark that lit his love for acting, his roles in the plays ever since were the wood that kindled the flame. Nikolai said the two most influential people in his acting career have been his father and Mr. Wener, the director of all the Collingwood plays. Since his dad was in the movie business, he has helped Nikolai with both the techniques of acting as well as basic shot compositions.

“Acting helps explore people”, expressed Nikolai, adding “It’s a way to let you discover what you could have been and let you see how another person could have handled the situation”. His favorite actors include Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney. Nikolai’s most stressful play was Any Number Can Die. It was his first lead role and he was very nervous on the opening night. But he saw how the other actors were keeping nerve and he said they helped him a lot. His advice for future actors wishing to partake to in plays is: “It’s going to be hard, but the thrill and adrenaline will make it worth it.”
Besides acting, Nikolai also greatly enjoys directing. And as he extolled, he enjoys movie directing far more than stage directing, as movies will allow him to redo and start over whereas in theatre, if you mess up there are no means of redemption. His favorite genres of films are sci-fi, war movies and anything about clones. “I have not failed, I just found another way that doesn’t work.” This is Nikolai’s favorite quote; he chose it because it resonates with his memory of editing his first movie - he had edited the entire movie but he had to re-edit the entire thing because of a quality issue.
Other than acting, directing, and movie editing, Nikolai also greatly enjoys soccer, whether it is in a video game or playing on the field with his friends.
We sincerely hope that the cracking embers of his acting will expand into a blazing fire. Nikolai plans on continuing his pursuits in the school plays as well as beyond the scope of Collingwood! Best wishes to him as he pursues his dreams of becoming a movie director!
