Many Collingwood students leave a lasting impression at our school. Collingwood is also very influential on its students after they have left. One of Sabrina’s passions throughout her Collingwood career was art, and it continues to be to this day. Sabrina Wang, who has a younger sister in her final year at Collingwood, attended Collingwood for 8 years and is now an alumnus. Although Sabrina is currently focusing on a degree in neuroscience, she is also making sure that she is continuing to build on her skills. “Art has always been a part of my life, and I have no doubt that it will continue to be a part of my life.
Her passion for art began to kindle when she was in Kindergarten. “I became interested in art in kindergarten, when I was curious on how to draw a face. I asked my mother, and apparently was extremely dissatisfied with her rendition, so I took it upon myself to correct her. I’ve continued ever since.”
Photo-realism was one of the first genres that she started creating pieces in. “I believed photo-realism was ultimate standard in art. Since then, my perspective on art has evolved to much more than just that category. Right now, I’m very interested in tonal drawing, using just inks.”

She has been inspired by artists such as Jana Schirmer, who changed her perspective on art. Sabrina had not seen a genre of art like the pieces that she had seen in Jana’s sketchbooks before.
Aside from her artwork; Sabrina loves to bake, read, and considers herself “an avid Netflix watcher.” She also enjoys running. “I have always liked running - it clears my head, and there is nothing like the rhythmic breathing as your legs and arms fall into sync.” At Collingwood, Sabrina’s favourite sport was badminton.
Her favourite subject at school, unsurprisingly, was art. During her last year in art at Collingwood, Ms. Geddes gave her “total freedom” for her AP portfolio. Sabrina explored many different mediums, colour schemes, and artistic styles. Some of her favourite pieces are still from this portfolio. One of such creations is a piece that she painted on a pane of glass. In addition to art, she also enjoyed Human Geography and Psych. She is finding that her language skills that she acquired at Collingwood are coming in handy in university

Sabrina describes art as very intimate, as “who you are as a person is often displayed for the world to see through your artistic medium.” Her advice to artists who are developing their skills would be to practice. “And don’t worry if you don’t think your work will be great. It will be.” I wish Sabrina all the best in the future with her artistic prowess and with her degree.
