Royce Ma started his musical journey as a violinist when he was only five years old. Royce could not recall what compelled him to choose violin over the hundreds of other instruments when he was so young. After playing the violin for only a year and enjoying it, Royce started to take lessons from a professional violinist. From that moment on, violin became an important part of his life.
His interest in violin strengthened in sixth grade when an orchestral group was organized at his international school. Royce felt a musical connectivity to his fellow musicians through their mutual passion for music.
Despite having parents who he professes are not musically inclined, their guidance and support of Royce has been immense. To Royce, his mother was a prominent figure who influenced his early stages of music. She constantly pushed him to achieve higher goals, telling him “it was going to be worth it one day.” Looking back at all his previous years of hard work, Royce believes that he owes his success to his mother and her dedication.
During the summer of 2014, Royce represented China in over 3 international music festivals that occurred in Budapest and Prague. This experience not only exposed him to a professional platform of performance, but also offered an opportunity to study under master-class musicians at a musical institution.
When asked about his favorite genres of music to play, Royce enjoys classical and video game music. The richness and grandeur of classical music captivates him, while the nostalgic upbeat qualities of video game music intrigues him.
At present, Royce’s active participation in Collingwood’s performing arts can be seen during assemblies and other performing art events. He is currently the concertmaster in the Collingwood orchestra as well as a singer in concert choir.
As a member of the graduating class of 2016, Royce wishes to pursue his musical interests at university. He looks forward to potentially writing music as a hobby, with no current “big plans” for violin scheduled ahead of him. We wish Royce all the best in his future musical pursuits.
