Senior student Amy Young, avid reader, proficient writer and tennis champion, is also one of Collingwood’s most devoted and skilled visual artists. Ever since she was young, Amy displayed a keen interest in drawing, which soon grew into a passion that now plays a vital role throughout her daily life, entailing prolonged hours of art making per week.
Outside of the studio space, Amy likes to “watch Netflix”, “play video games”, and “eat different foods, in general”. As a fervent foodie, Amy reveals that she currently works part-time at Legendary Hot Pot, a newly opened Chinese restaurant at Park Royal. With her strong work ethic and lighthearted outlook with respect to hobbies and pastimes, it isn’t hard to imagine Amy cheerfully greeting customers at the door.

Amy’s choice to work at a hotpot restaurant alludes to her Chinese ethnicity, which she ardently embraces as an integral part of her craft. Amy was born a first-generation Canadian; being submersed within a traditional Shanghainese home environment while exposed to Canadian culture, Amy has developed quite a unique worldview. In Amy’s AP Studio Art Drawing portfolio that she is busy putting together throughout this school year, she decided to do a series of work exhibiting her perspective of Chinese heritage through the lens of in between two cultures.
Her drawings display both adept technical skills and creativity, splashed with a hint of edgy innovativeness and novel risk-taking behaviour. Amy’s works encompass the usage and adroit manipulation of a variety of mediums; she expresses that her favourite mediums are ballpoint pens, which she likes “for precision”, and gouache paint, which allows her to attain “pretty and vibrant colours” in a short amount of time.

Art being an integral part of her identity, Amy has chosen to continue her studies in visual arts in her secondary education. Amy took on fine arts as a serious career path around three years ago, regularly attending extracurricular studio classes to build upon her artistic competence and to put together a college admission portfolio. To tie in her interest in reading, writing, and cultural studies, Amy is interested in pursuing a double major in fine arts and humanities. “Art? I really love it. I really can’t imagine doing anything else.” Undoubtedly, art will proceed to reside in Amy’s continuous discovery of herself. We wish her the best of luck in all her bold and exceptional future pursuits!
