A photo is never simply a photo; it speaks the language of memories and emotions, words and moments, color and composition and technique; of the love of art, and of the desire to hold a second for eternity. But most of all, it speaks of the individual behind the camera, the way they see the world, the way they want to capture the beauty of the universe through the lens of their camera.
Elle Nicholson was born and raised in Vancouver and had a brief one year affair with Spain when she was twelve. Elle grew up in a family of modern nomads, giving her the wonderful experience of having “travelled to some incredible places like Costa Rica, Morocco, and Vietnam”. It was on one of these adventures that she acquired her first machine of memories—a camera she bought in Kenya, which she visited at age eleven. Like in the face of all new things, she initially, “had no idea what [she] was doing!” But driven by passion and curiosity, Elle would take her camera on every trip, making sure it was in her possession, “each time [she left] the hotel room, no matter what”.
At Collingwood, as one can expect by her enthusiasm and dedication, Elle seized the opportunity enhance her relatively basic knowledge of photography in Mr. Francis’s Photography 11 course. Two months ago Elle, “saved up all of [her] money and bought [her] first Canon camera before [she] went on vacation to Asia” and Mr. Francis showed her “a whole new side of photography [she] never knew was there.” The photos she took magnificently portray the results of these well-earned skills.
In addition to her hobby of photography, Elle plays volleyball both outside and inside school, but unfortunately “not as much this year because of the academically challenging school year”. But she expresses that “hopefully I will be on the volleyball team from grade 8 until my final year at Collingwood!”
The focus of Elle’s photography projects is mainly that of travel, but she hopes to accumulate experience in other areas. Her favorite photo is a sunset photograph, “where [her] family is playing soccer with the stunning light behind them”. Elle expresses that photography will be “something [she] will always love and be dedicated to.”
