Dance is a universal language. It is a language like none other: its vocabulary and grammar are made up of movements and gestures. It is a language that goes beyond words. And it goes beyond words to a pure and deep level of communication that is perhaps closer to music than anything else. Its depth comes from the instinctual energy of the dancer and can evoke in the dancer levels of joy and pure passion.
Jae Chun is a young dancer who exemplifies fluency in this passionate language that we call dance. In his dancing, Jae is passionately involved in developing and advancing his dance skills. Some of his favourite moves are tutting, popping and locking. But to Jae, nothing beats the in-the-moment freestyle where he can truly let go and allow his moves to take over.
Jae has been dancing and expressing himself through the art of hip-hop since he was in grade three when he saw his first street dance performance. Jae was so captivated by that performance that he fell in love with dance and immediately wanted to learn the art of dance. Because of this encounter with the magic of dance, Jae became a passionate dancer.
One of his mantras for dancing is to practise, practise, practise. But something as equally important, if not more so, for Jae, is to dance for the joy of it. Jae believes in enjoying dance because it is crucial for him that dance remains an expression of his passion. Jae says, “It’s important to always feel comfortable and confident in what you do.”
Apart from dance, another one of Jae’s passions is the related field of music. From the young age of seven, Jae was lucky enough to discover his love of composing music. He picked up his guitar and started writing songs, letting his creativity flow. As for his future plans, he maintains that he will never stop dancing; however, he plans to study music, particularly composition, at the Kyung Hee University in Korea.
Jae is continuing to share his talent with the Hip Hop Crew in Collingwood and will be performing a piece he choreographed himself in the student choreography show this coming December.
Offering some advice to other developing dancers, Jae says, “Don’t forget to always express who you are.”
