Erin Huang has been part of Collingwood’s visual art program since she joined the school in grade 8, and has become a better artist in leaps and bounds at this school. Ever since she was young, she has taken art lessons and has done art in all forms, from ceramics to weaving and painting. Being part of a family of developers and builders, Erin has seen building blueprints and drawings from a very young age, and was familiar with architecture as well. Erin has seen architecture and family projects in both Shanghai and Vancouver, having gone to school in both cities.
In her spare time, Erin enjoys reading, watching science fiction movies, shopping, and spending time with her friends. Also, she enjoys travelling and especially visiting museums and sketching classical Greek sculptures. She has a passion for sketching and drawing from life, and likes to draw what she sees during her travels. She is excited to go on Collingwood’s Eastern Europe tour this spring break, and draw the buildings, people, and architecture she will be seeing soon.

As an artist who has worked with many mediums and in both 2D and 3D, Erin has found a medium of expression in all of these different materials, and worked to express her personal message through these works. She usually likes working in pencil, as this medium encourages her spontaneity. She has also been experimenting with more colours in her artwork, especially the use of collage and acrylic paints. When doing figure drawings, Erin prefers charcoal and graphite sticks for their bold lines, and while drawing buildings and architecture, she prefers black fine liner pens and ink pens.
As well as being an artist, Erin has a deep appreciation for all things related to art, including art history, which she took as a course at Collingwood, and for which she won the AP Art History subject award. Through art history, she has learned about many different styles of art, and draws inspiration from abstract expressionists such as Rothko and Pollock. She is also familiar with local artists, and has recently admired the works of Bobby Burgers. All three artists create works that “are atmospheric and transportive, on a large scale and with colours that seem as if you could be there in the painting.”

Erin’s artwork is original and creative, in that she often works with 3D models as her main medium of expression, often utilizing different materials such as shish kebab sticks, wire mesh, sink mats, and even tracing paper. She uses these materials to express different architectural ideas, and has created many models for her architecture school portfolio.
Recently, Erin participated in a design competition in which participants were asked to completely redesign a Japanese restaurant from top to bottom, including the furniture and lighting.
After high school, Erin plans on becoming an architect and pursuing a design-related career. She has worked on her architecture school portfolio for nearly two years now, and plans on extending these designs into university and beyond.
We wish Erin the best with her continued artistic excellence, and look forward to her architectural endeavours in the future!
