“The same camera can take a million unique and special photos.” Since childhood, Ciara has enjoyed depicting moments. Recently, she has diverted her attention from painting and drawing to another form of visual art: photography. Prior to joining Mr Francis’s photography class, Ciara said that she hadn’t had very much experience with photography. Now, she says that “[Mr Francis] has shown me how to create really unique and personal photographs.”
Ciara was born in England. She has called many contrasting places home, including London, Mumbai, Hong Kong, and Vancouver. “I think photography has made me appreciate things in my own life more than I used to. Photography allows you to see beauty, feelings, memories and emotions in places where you originally may not have seen them. For example, my photographs of Chinatown allowed me to see parts of my old life - living in Hong Kong and Mumbai - in Vancouver, which makes me feel more at home.”
Aside from photography, Ciara is also fond of boxing. “Most people don’t know this, but boxing is my favourite sport. I started boxing when I moved to Vancouver and it is one of the things I love most about living here.” Her favourite subjects are the sciences - specifically biology. She believes that differentiating between the sciences and art is crucial.

Ciara still draws occasionally, but says “I love how photography can freeze any moment/person/place in time forever - and much more realistically than I can draw it!” When asked if she has any advice for people who are trying to improve their photography, Ciara says: “Just keep trying. I barely knew how to turn on a camera when I started photo class this year (and I’m definitely still trying to figure everything out), but the most important thing is that you keep taking photographs and experimenting with the camera; eventually, something is bound to work!”
Her favourite part of photography is how personal each photo is. No two photographers can capture an identical picture. “What you choose to photograph, and how, can reflect a lot about who you are as a person.”
In the future, Ciara says that she would “definitely like to continue photos in life. It is a great way to document experiences and moments. For example, I’d love to travel later in life, and I want to take photos to remember every experience, place and person.”
