When you first discover something you love to do, it becomes evident. This was the case for Jacqueline Lau, a talented, adventurous, and creative graphic designer, currently in her grad year at Collingwood School.
“I’ve been interested in all sorts of art basically from the moment I could hold a crayon,” Jacqueline states about the discovery of her passion. Yet, her niche in the art world now fits into graphic design. When most people think about art, they picture a painter, an illustrator, or maybe a classical musician… but in this day and age some of the truest forms of art are born through the use of technology. Technology plays a major role in the creation of Jacqueline’s artwork. Graphic design is the art or profession of visual communication that combines images, words, and ideas to convey information to an audience, especially to produce a specific effect. This means that most of Jacqueline’s works of art are digital or printed. On the other hand, in addition to graphic designs, Jacqueline also experiments in mixed media. Mixed media is a type of artwork incorporating more than one medium; therefore these pieces are produced hard copies. Likewise, Jacqueline’s other forms of non-digital work are collages, photography, pencil, charcoal or conté pieces. Although equally as in love with these mediums, her most prominent inspiration is graphic design.

Jacqueline’s process in which she goes about her work includes a series of steps. To begin, she uses charcoal or watercolors to create her own, personal aspect of the piece on paper. After, she digitalizes it and completes it on Illustrator. Illustrator is an advanced computer program used specifically for design.
Jacqueline’s story of her graphic design career began in the summer after her grade ten year. She was surprised with how thoroughly she enjoyed it and also the substantial increase of fascination since that time. Since then, she tries to incorporate design into everything she does. Jacqueline has taken Art 11 Enriched, Graphic Design 11, Digital Photography 11, AP Studio Art, and Graphic Design 12 at Collingwood. In addition to her obvious academic interest in art, Jacqueline takes on major initiative outside of school to also display her talents. She designs everything from posters, flyers, infographics, and even business cards. With creativity also comes benevolence. Jacqueline works with a charity organization called the SDC Blue Ribbon Foundation to do volunteer work while also actively expressing her amazing design capabilities. Although it can become difficult and stressful to maintain an organized balance between school and volunteer work, Jacqueline admits that it is less like work to her and more like play because she is doing what she loves most.
Jacqueline has also achieved many accomplishments regarding her artwork. She annually receives grade colours for Art and Graphic Design along with the Graphic Design 11 subject award. As well, her artwork has been chosen to be displayed in the ISABC Art Show for the past 2 consecutive years. Looking into the future, Jacqueline plans on pursuing a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree at an American university in the fall of 2015.
Overall, Jacqueline views art as a lifestyle as opposed to simply an after school hobby. Not only this, but she feels as if it is imperative that we recognize the contributions to our surroundings that it makes: “I feel like design is so much a part of everyone’s lives; we just fail to notice it. Every single thing, from the billboard at the bus stop to the desk you sit at, was designed by someone, and the feeling of being a part of something so ubiquitous is one of the big reasons I love design.”
