Collingwood is known for its strong performing Arts Strand, with programs ranging from choir to musical to dance. Through the many performances during the school year, we celebrate our community of talented artists. One such gifted artist is Ann Zhao. With her mellifluous voice, Ann Zhao has captivated the audience in many performances.
Ann was born and raised in Vancouver, and came to Collingwood in Grade 9. Ann has been involved in choir since Kindergarten. As she grew up, Ann learned to love singing as an artistic form of expression. To Ann, art means personality. She expresses, “It gives a sense of individuality and is an easy way of expressing myself.” As Ann graces the stage with many performances, it is evident that she has found her voice in the Collingwood community. Ann also reveals that a challenge in pursuing her passion is that music is very time consuming. Just like all other forms of art, music requires dedication to excel and she acknowledges, “it takes time to practice, time to make errors, and time to correct yourself.”

Ann’s musical sources of inspiration come from Ella Fitzgerald and Ed Sheeran: “[Fitzgerald] is one of the most talented jazz singers and she has an incredible voice. Ed Sheeran is one of my other inspirations - his voice and style of writing are both amazing.”
Beyond singing, Ann enjoys many other activities. She plays volleyball, and is active in additional performing arts, including piano and guitar. Ann is also excited to make her first debut as an actress in the upcoming play, The Diary of Anne Frank, where she plays Margot Frank, the sister of Anne Frank.
Although Ann does not plan to pursue music professionally, she hopes to audition for a choir at university. Ann is currently focusing on the sciences and hopes to study medicine. She advises her fellow budding artists to take practice seriously, “don’t skip out on practice because it’s time consuming - the only way you get better is if you practice.” Dedicated and passionate, Ann has certainly followed her own advice and has thrived in performing. Keep an eye on this talented singer and actor as you attend future school concerts and plays!
