Mona Kirschener is an Alumni writer and linguist who immigrated from San Pablo, Brazil before beginning kindergarten at Collingwood School. Currently, she is living in Brooklyn, New York as she continues her passion for all things writing. As her father is Romanian and mother is Brazilian, she decided at the age of 20 to engulf herself in her roots, which is why she moved back to Brazil and lived there for 10 years. In 2018 she moved back to New York and continued with her non-fiction collection of writing.
Other than writing, which she finds to be a great way to work through pain, to share joy, and to express herself in an intimate manner, she enjoys yoga and has been practicing for 8 years. As a young child, Mona also rode horses, which is another passion of hers, and subsequently competed in show jumping. At home in her spare time, she also enjoys cooking, reading, visual arts such as painting and drawing, and travelling which she has extensively completed.
For Mona, writing is much more than typing words on a document, but rather, it is a means to get past personal struggles and a positive and expressive manner. This is why she is currently working on a collection of non-fiction essays, one of which was published on Long Reads, and is titled, “The Spiritual Path at Fat Camp”. This interesting read delves into her experiences with heartbreak and the series of events that followed. For Mona, art and writing represents freedom, and comfort, while also giving her the opportunity to reflect and move on.
In all, Mona has come a long way as a writer, and states that she is inspired by her mother who is the hardest working person that she knows, as she stops at nothing to achieve her goals. High school was when writing first captivated Mona, however, she only got serious about it after moving to New York, and experiencing painful heartbreak after a 10-year long relationship. She states that “writing became a purpose to the pain that I went through in addition to a way to express myself creatively and share my struggles and conquests with those I loved, and turned out it wasn’t half bad, and now the general public has some access to it.” For this reason, Mona feels as though writing has helped her evolve into the best version of herself by providing her with an incredible and fulfilling hobby in addition to her professional life that she devotes herself to. It has also challenged her in several ways, as Mona kindly emphasizes that “I write memoir so exposing my life and secrets can be super difficult especially in public form.” As for future plans, she hopes to discover how other writers face down the blank page while inspiring others.
