Camera Obscura (n): a box, room, or device with a small hole that lets light through and shows an image on an opposite surface
In place of the traditional gallery the Collingwood Arts Department hosts annually, a vibrant virtual spectacle was unveiled last week. Cleverly titled Obscura, the show is a culmination of the artistic splendour showcased by the Visual Art, Photo & Design, and Film classes throughout the 2020-2021 school year. The interactive poster that serves as the interface is exemplary of the talent Collingwood artists hold. Designed by Doris Ni, a Grade 12 student and prolific artist, her poster captures the essence of creativity with its eye-catching cutouts and neon background. Organized in neat boxes at the bottom of the page are buttons that transport you to various displays: a heartwarming video delivered by Ms. Evans and the Art Department, numerous Padlet galleries that display works from optical illusions to powerful typography, and a collection of well-enacted short films. The highlight of the show is certainly the immersive Grad Gallery. Much like a virtual tour, clicking your keyboard arrows lets you glide through the halls of the exhibition to view the sophisticated artwork the Grade 12s have produced. Obscura offers a truly stunning visual experience that encapsulates the importance of beauty and imagination. If you have not yet watched the show, consider this an official invitation for you to grab your laptop and start browsing.
