Jett Gleason is a talented Grade 12 student who has left a lasting impression on the arts at Collingwood. Jett was born in Vancouver, but she first found her passion for art while living in Ecuador. During this time, her babysitter gave her a paint set, which marked the beginning of her creative journey. Since then, Jett has been involved in Collingwood’s arts strand since she first started at the school in Grade 8.
Within the Collingwood community, Jett has taken part in countless impactful plays and created many memorable pieces of visual art that have decorated the school’s halls. Specifically in the visual arts program, Jett has displayed a creative talent for working with diverse mediums, from traditional paintings to repurposed materials. Beyond school, Jett is also a talented competitive swimmer and enjoys running, reading, and spending time with her dog.
Jett says that her favourite medium of art to work with is acrylic paint and paper, a medium that she has created many amazing pieces with in the past. However, a particular inspiration for Jett was her teacher at a fashion design camp who inspired her to move beyond her work with 2D paper to become more experimental with her art. For example, she began more experimentation with clothing creation– during her time in Collingwood’s visual arts program, she created a beautiful life-sized wedding dress from only newspaper and duct tape. Another memorable piece for Jett was a realistic portrait of her mom, done with acrylic paint.
As for the future, Jett will be pursuing a degree in marine biology at Dalhousie University in Halifax. We hope that she has a wonderful experience in her first year of university and wish Jett the best during her future studies!
