Meet Kyle Groundwater, an accomplished and passionate musician at Collingwood. Kyle, long before his arrival at Collingwood in Grade 9, had already begun exploring the world of sounds.
Regardless of whether it’s creating music or enjoying music, it’s safe to say that Kyle is experienced. He has composed 2 pieces of music so far, and we should expect more insight into his musical talents in the near future, as he hints that “more is on the way.” Aside from music, Kyle has a number of other hobbies and interests. Kyle has been playing soccer for 12 years. Recently, he’s also developed a keen interest in painting. Kyle’s favourite subjects in school include Calculus, History and Law; he likes to take on challenges. At the same time, Kyle is someone who is willing to think through the lens of different narratives, which aids him not only in academic courses but also in the development of new music.
When asked about his philosophy regarding art, Kyle suggests that his approach is to simply “go for it, do what you want to do, and surround yourself with people who genuinely support you”. Kyle values opportunities that allow him to experience new things. He constantly considers what he could do to be the best version of himself.
A key inspiration in Kyle’s music career is his father. As a result of witnessing his father’s hard work, Kyle strives to meet his own standards. He says that the time spent “learning chords on his own made him determined.” Over time, Kyle found his own definition of music, and what it means to him; a perspective that allows him to explore what he enjoys and realize his emotions. He believes that music has greatly influenced himself as a person, as it taught him about the culture of different parts of the world, and the many types of music they listen to.
It also came with new experiences and created opportunities where he was able to grow and communicate with people such as event managers.
Although Kyle plans to pursue a career in business in the future, he notes that “he won’t forget about music.” Until then, he plans to introduce others to this exciting world of his and fully experience what his band, FUNQ, has to offer. Kyle, along with a few aspiring artists at Collingwood, established a band named FUNQ. As the bass guitarist of the band, Kyle and the rest of FUNQ has achieved some impressive feats: In August, FUNQ performed at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Kyle encourages those who are passionate to follow their dreams. Through the lessons and experiences he has been taught, Kyle continues to be inspired and motivated by music both in and out of the band room.
